almostは微妙なルールがあるのでまとめてみました。
位置によっては真逆の意味になることもあるし使えないパタンもあります。

１　一般動詞の前のalmostは「もう少しで（…するところだ）危うく（…するところだ）

The boy almost drank the poison.
その男の子はもう少しで毒を飲むところだった。
I almost forgot.　もう少しで忘れるところだった。


２　数、量、時間、比較表現の前では「ほぼ…、約…、…近く」

I’ve been studying English for almost ten years.
私は英語を10年近く勉強しています。

It’s almost ten.　もうすぐ10時です。
★時間表現ではalmostはbe動詞の後に限られている。
×They arrived at almost ten o’clock.
○It was almost ten o’clock when they arrived.

John is almost as tall as Bob.
ジョンの身長はビルとほぼ同じだ。


３　all, every, any, alwaysの前では「ほとんど（すべて）」

Almost everyone at school has a cellphone.
≒ Almost all the kids at school have cellphones.
学校ではほとんどの生徒が携帯を持っている。

The matter called “air” is almost always a gas.
「空気」と呼ばれる物質は通常は気体である。

★「彼らのほとんど」を× almost of themとしないようにする。
　○ almost all of themとする。
Almost all of them reached the summit.
彼らのほとんどが登頂した。

“Did you understand?”　「わかりましたか？」
“Almost everything[almost all of it].”　「ほとんどわかりました。」



４　no, nothing, not, neverなどの前で「ほとんど（…でない）」

I remember almost nothing about the day.
≒ I hardly remember anything about the day.
その日のことはほとんど何も覚えていない。

We almost didn’t get there in time.
≒ We only just got there in time.
危うく遅れるところだった。

★not, very, so, prettyの修飾は受けれないので
× There is not almost enough money to buy it.とはできない。
○ There is not nearly enough money to buy it.


５　the same, the entire, the only, the whole, the+最上級などの前では「ほとんど、ほぼ」

Almost the entire crew died.
乗務員はほぼ死亡した。

I am almost the shortest.
私が一番背が低いほうです。


６　形容詞、副詞、過去分詞、前置詞句の前で「ほとんど、もう少しで、ほぼ」

He will almost certainly win the election.
彼が選挙に勝つのは九分九厘確実です。

“((Are) we) almost done?” “Almost.”
「だいたいは終わりましたか？」「ええ大方は」

She was almost in tears.
彼女は泣き出さんばかりだった。

an almost impossible mission
ほとんど実行不可能な指令
★程度を表す形容詞は修飾しない
× an almost difficult mission


７　文において「…と言ってもよい、…に等しい（後にくる語の使用が適切であることを述べる）」

He almost stole the money.
彼はその金を盗んだのも同然だった。（「もう少しで盗むところだった」の意味にもなるので前後の文で把握する）

It’ almost a miracle.
奇跡と言ってもよい。
