9月のとても暑い日の事。私は自衛隊の脇の道を車で走っていた。
私はその道が苦手だった。なぜなら、その道は細くて、車が２台すれ違うのがやっと。しかも電信柱がズラーっと並んで立っている。対向車が来たら、電信柱を避け、自衛隊のネットフェンスぎりぎりのところに止まってやり過ごさなければならない。フェンスの足元には丈の高い草むら続いている。毎回車を止めるときはその草むらぎりぎりに止めなければならないのだ。

On a hot day in last September, I drove on a road along a fence of Self Defense Force. I hated the road, because it was too narrow for two cars to go by each other, and to make matters worse, it had many power poles by the fence. Every　time other cars came from the opposite direction, I had to pause and stay at a spot without poles, within striking distance of the fence with tall much weeds.


その時も、対向車が見えたので、フェンスぎわに車を止めようと左に寄った。突然！すぐ前方の草むらが１ｍ以上盛り上がった！何？何なの　焦って急ブレーキをかけた。キキー！すると・・・。その草むらがこちらを向いた・・・。なんと、それは、迷彩服を着た自衛隊員だったのだ。ご丁寧に迷彩柄のヘルメットもかぶっている。完全に草むらと一体化している彼の手に光っているのは、草刈りの鎌。

After repeating that kind of pause, I saw an oncoming vehicle again and tried to stop my car by the fence. Suddenly a volume of grass went up high from a tussock right ahead on the left: just where I had intended to stop my car! What? What was that? I was surprised at that and felt pressed. I made a hard stop. Catching its noise, the volume of weeds turned this way! It was…., it was a member of Self-Defense Forces! He was standing in a green camouflage fatigue with the same colored helmet! In his hand, he had a sickle.

ねえ、自衛隊員さん。お願い！草刈りする時には迷彩服は着ないで！ここは日本。戦闘は行われていないから、安心して目立っていいのよ。いえ、うんと目立って頂戴！・・・・・・自衛隊には、迷彩服以外、作業用の服が無いのかしら・・・・・？

Oh, brother! <span class="caps">SDF</span> personnel, for God&#8217;s sake, never weed in a camouflage uniform outside of the fence. I recognized how effectively your uniform worked in the grass. Certainly it did well, but you should have worn it for a different aim. I suggest you should wear a bright color clothing to be found easily in the weeds when cutting them out, in a peaceful town, in Japan. Or &#8230;.. I wonder if you don&#8217;t have any other fatigue uniform.
