Is "twisted Diet" a Japanese-English?
My daughter learned an English word, twisted Diet, which in Japanese is very popular political word in Japan now, in her English lesson a few days ago. I didn’t know it, so I looked in an online dictionary, and found it.
I found one Japanese wrote that people in other countries couldn’t understand a meaning of the word, so it was better to add an explanation: the two houses of the Diet being controlled by different parties.
Reading that, I wonder “twisted Diet” is an English word, or a Japanese-English in fact.
Would you tell me about that?
数日前、娘が英語の授業で twisted Diet という言葉をやったそうだ。私は意味を知らなかったが、英辞郎 on the WEBで調べたら、「ねじれ国会」と書いてあった。
ところが、あるサイトで、「ねじれ国会」は英語で何と言うか、と質問している人がいて、それにこう答えている人がいた。「Press では『”twisted (contorted) Diet (ねじれ国会)” 』とか『twisted parliament』という人がいます.それだけでは意味がわからないでしょうね.(the two houses of the Diet being controlled by different parties )」
説明をしなければわからない言葉ということは、これは和製英語なのだろうか?
