スピーチコンテスト①・・・Canada vs New Zealand
I’m very glad, if you would help me with my English.
娘の毛蟹が中学2年生の時のこと。近隣のいくつかの市の学校が参加する英語のスピーチコンテストに、学校の2年生代表として出ることになった。
When my daughter was in the second year of junior-high-school, it was decided that she was going to enter a speech contest in English, which most of junior high schools in some cities near her school took part in.
8月のある日、英語の先生が短い英語の話をいくつか娘に渡し、その中から一つスピーチするものを選ぶように言った。しかし、どれもみんな面白くないし、短すぎる。コンテストでは制限時間の3分に限りなく近くスピーチした方がいいのだ。しかし、3分を超えると減点されてしまう。
One day in August, during summer vacation of school, one of her English teachers gave her some short stories and said to choose one she wanted to speech. But all of them were not interesting at all, and too short. She had to speech in three minutes, but never did over the time limit.
娘は私に、何かいい話を探して、と言った。私は図書館に行き、英語の子供用の短い話を色々とみて、イソップ童話の中の話を選んだ。
She asked me to find a good story for her. I went to a library and got some short stories for children. I chose one story from Aesop’s fables.
それは、欲張りなヤギ飼いと野生のヤギたちの話だ。私が声に出して読んでみると1分30秒。短すぎる。そこでなるべく元の英語はいじらないようにしながら、会話を足したり、描写を詳しく描き足したりして何度も書き直した。我が家にある英和、和英辞書4冊を使い、2日間かけ、ついにそれは2分45秒の話になった。
The story was about a greedy goatherd and a flock of wild goats. It took only about one minute and 30 seconds when I read aloud it. Therefore I rewrote it to be longer: Adding some more specific expressions, dialogues and actions. Using 4 dictionaries for two days, I made it a story for 2 minutes and 45 seconds with reading aloud at last.
娘はその原稿を持って学校に行き、ALTの先生に渡した。その先生は2学期から英語を教える予定の先生で、ニュージーランド出身だった。先生は私の原稿を読んで日本語で言った。
「オカアサンハ、ネイティブデスカ?」
娘はびっくりして言った。
「違います!あの・・・日本語はネイティブですけど。」
She went to school with the script, and show it to an assistant English language teacher from NZ, who was going to teach English from next September to December at her school. Reading it, he asked her in Japanese, “Is your mother an English native speaker?” She was said with surprise, “No! She is a Japanese native speaker.”
そして娘は、私がいくら調べても辞書に載っていなかった単語について尋ねた。
「あの、この単語の意味を教えてくれますか?なんかよくわからないんですけれど。」
「おー・・・、これ、分かりません。イソップ、知らない言葉、いろいろあります。」
先生はそう言って、原稿を何度か読み、何箇所か書きなおした。
Then, she asked him about some words which I couldn’t find in my dictionaries, “Please tell me their meanings.” He answered, “Sorry, I don’t know them. Some words in Aesop’s fables are difficult for us today.” Then reading it several times, he corrected the mistake and rewrote some expressions.
その夜、娘の話を聞いてちょっと心配になった。私が英語のネイティブだって?イソップの単語が分からないって?ホントにこの先生、大丈夫なの?ま、とにかく、訂正された原稿をパソコンで清書した。
At that night, I heard about him from her, I became anxious. I was an English native speaker? How stupid! Didn’t he know some words in a story for children? Was he really an English teacher? Anyway, I typed up the script in accordance with his corrections.
翌日、娘は書きなおした原稿を持って学校に行った。その日はニュージランド人の先生はいなくて、かわりにカナダ出身のALTの先生がいた。その先生は1学期の先生で、娘と仲が良かった。
Next day, she went to school with the new script again. On the day, the New Zealander wasn’t there, but another <span class="caps">ALT</span> was, who came from Canada, and had taught from last April to last July there. She liked him, and they were close.
娘はその先生に昨日の原稿を見せた。先生はそれを読み、日本語で言った。
「ニュージーランドの英語、ちょっと変。カナダの英語の方がうける。」
そして、片っ端から書き直していった!
私はその晩、またパソコンでそれを清書した。
She was glad to show it to him. Reading it, he said her in Japanese, “English in NZ is kind of strange. The Japanese prefer Canadian English rather than NZ’s.”, and made big changes. At that night, I typed it again.
翌日、娘は更に書き直された原稿を持って学校に行った。その日は、カナダ人の先生はいなくて、あのニュージーランド人の先生がいた。先生はその原稿を読むと、また片っ端から書き直していった。
その晩、また私はその原稿を清書した。そして思った。「また明日、カナダ人の先生が来てたら、どうなるんだろう・・・。」
The next day, she went to school with the newer script again. On the day, the Canadian teacher wasn’t, and the New zealander teacher was. He read it with made big changes, and made a drastic revision.
At that night, I repeated my work, and thought, “If the Canadian teacher is at school tomorrow, will he rewrite this again?”
