AudiobookでLouis Sachar の「Fuzzy Mud」を聴いています。


Louis Sacharといえば、「Holes」が有名ですが、他にもやさしくておもしろい児童書をたくさん書いていて、私も何冊か読みました。

でも、今回は文字無しで音だけなので、理解できるか不安でした。どんなお話なのかまったく基礎知識がなく聴き始めたので、最初はちんぷんかんぷん。速度を0.6倍に落として聴いたりしていました。

同じところを何度も何度も繰り返して聴いているうちに、状況がわかってきて、おもしろくなってきました。

初め、主人公の女の子の名前は「マーヤ」だと思っていたのですが、なぜかいちいち「to Maya」ってto が入るのが不思議でした。だいぶ経ってから、ああ、名前そのものが「トゥマヤ（Tamaya）」なのだと気付いた始末。

でも、どうしても知らない単語が出てくるので、困ります。音だけから辞書を引くのは難しい。

そんなとき、mewmewnecoさんに教えていただいたのが、英語字幕を付ける方法。

そして、自分の音声ファイルもChromeで再生して字幕を表示してもらえるんです。

早速これを使ってみることに。
まだ序盤を繰り返し聴いている段階なので、そこを字幕で確認しました。

「ハーミド」って野獣のようなものかと想像していたのは「hermit（隠者）」でした。

「harden」だと思っていたのは「heard him」でした。

いじめっ子のChadがMarshallのことを蔑んで呼んでいた言葉は「bad face」だと思っていたのですが、「butt face」でした。

なんとなくストーリーが分かればいいや、と思っていたのですが、こういうふうに自分の聴き取りの弱点が分かるのはありがたいです。

※Marshallは些細なことからChadに目の敵にされ、クラス中のみんなもChadに倣って、Marshallは孤立してしまいます。

snide: derogatory or mocking in an indirect way.
pick on: repeatedly single someone out for criticism or unkind treatment in a way perceived to be unfair.
take sth out on sb: to treat someone badly because you are upset or angry, even if they have done nothing wrong （仲間外れにされるようになったMarshallは、Tamayaに八つ当たりする）

※Chad はついにMarshallを叩きのめすために放課後呼び出します。Marshallはその場所を避けるために、いつもと違う道（森の中）を通って帰ることに。毎日一緒に通学しなければならない2学年下のTamayaも仕方なくついていきます。

※森の中でさんざん道に迷った二人はChadに出合ってしまいます。Tamayaはこれで助かったと思いますが、ChadはMarshallを殴り始めます。Tamayaはとっさにそばにあった不思議な泥（Fuzzy Mud）をつかんでChadの顔に投げつけます。
うまくChadから逃れて家にたどり着いたものの、Tamayaの右手が赤ブツブツができています。絆創膏はBand-Aid っていうんですね。

gauze：a very fine wire mesh （ガーゼのことはゴウズっていうんですね）
embellish：make (something) more attractive by the addition of decorative details or features.
cootie：a child's term for an imaginary germ or disease that
one can catch by touching a person who is disliked or socially avoided
