I suddenly woke up early this morning, because I was feeling anxious about today’s first ESL class. Actually, I arrived in LA around 10 days ago, but I was feeling that I couldn’t speak and listen enough then. Also, I was worried about making friends… However, once our class began, I really enjoyed talking with my classmates. In fact, we couldn’t understand each other at first and explained again and again, but that communication was fun for me. Although there are many Asian students in our class such as Chinese, Tiwanese, and Koreans, there are the only two Japanese, including me. This is a great situation for me, because if I’m with a Japanese friend, I easily speak Japanese instead of English. I feel it’s hard to speak English with someone who speaks Japanese. It’s a kind of embarrassing to speak English with someone when we both can speak Japanese. In the end, I didn’t speak any Japanese word whole day.
After the class, I talked with some Chinese girls and went to Little Tokyo to have a lunch together. I’m temporarily staying at a hotel and still looking for a room and roommate, and so is one of the girls. We talked about our conditions for the room, such as the price range of rent, the distance from SCI-Arc etc… Finally, we found that our conditions fit each other, and decided to be roommates and look for a room together. Actually, I was looking for a room after I arrived here, but I really couldn’t find a nice one. I have never lived in the US before and I’m not sure of the lifestyle in LA, how to find and share a room, where is good to live, and also how much rent normally costs. That’s why I spent the most of these days understanding and getting used to LA.
We went to a restaurant where we can eat traditional Japanese food. Because I miss Japanese food already, I sometimes eat at Little Tokyo, but it was my first time at this restaurant. I ordered Udon, a kind of noodle, and the two Chinese girls chose Teriyaki Chicken Lunch, seasoned with soy sauce. They were familiar with Japanese culture, but I explained about those foods and Japanese culture because they didn’t know some things. They said it was delicious, I won’t say it wasn’t delicious, but it’s not exactly Japanese food. Most of the Japanese food which I can eat in LA is not ordinary Japanese food, but “Americanized Japanese” food. I think that same thing happens in Chinatown and Korean Town in LA. In any case, I am healed when I have Japanese food in these busy and tense days.
