前回、意外と多くの方が見て下さり、ありがとうございました。
まったくのきまぐれなので、次はいつになるかわかりませんが、ご愛顧いただければ幸いです。

今日は朝見たトラッドジャパンから気になった表現をメモメモ♪
ちょっと長くなりました。
テーマは端午の節句。
自分でも簡単にLang-8で書いて単語などチェックしてあったけど、寝ぼけた頭にあのスピードはついて行けませんでした。
ですので、ゴガクルから拾いました。

In households across Japan, ：全国の家庭では、
＞householdのほうが、一緒に住んでる家族、家庭というイメージみたい。
　familyだと、親戚まで含まれたりするのかな？
　homeだと、故郷という広い意味の場合もあるよね。

auspicious：
showing signs that something is likely to be successful in the future (OALD)
1. 前兆のよい，さい先のよい.
2. めでたい，吉兆の. (Weblio)
ex. an auspicious start to the new school year

scale：
any of the thin plates of hard material that cover the skin of many fish and reptiles (OALD)
one of the small flat pieces of skin that cover the bodies of fish, snakes etc (LDOCE)
「うろこ」っていう意味もあったんですね－。
ex. The beast was a dragon, with great purple and green scales.

ward off evil：邪気を払う
ward　off：to protect or defend yourself against danger, illness, attack, etc

harness(v.)：
1. to put a harness on a horse or other animal; to attach a horse or other animal to something with a harness
こっちは知ってた。（文中にharnessが入っちゃってるけど＾＾；）

2. to control and use the force or strength of something to produce power or to achieve something (OALD)
または
to control and use the natural force or power of something (LDOCE)
（(特に自然)力を）利用する

よく使う英英辞典にはどちらも載っていなかったけど、wikipedia(英語版)を読むといろいろ書いてあって面白かったですよ。愛の象徴だとか、どうしてこういう名前になったとか。番組でもハーブの一種と言っていました。へー。

scent：
smell ：「におい」を表わす最も一般的な語
odor ：不快なにおいについて使うことが多い
fragrance：花・香水などの快いにおい
scent ：かすかなにおい
stench ：強い悪臭
