[調査] during と while の違い

「~の間」って言いたい時の使い分けがぼんやりしてたので、再確認してみようと思う。

during [preposition]
1. from the beginning to the end of a period of time
2. at some point in a period of time
⇒ある期間の初めから終わりまで
⇒ある期間の中のどこか

while [conjunction]
1. during the time that something is happening
2. all the time that something is happening
⇒何かが起きている時間(のどこか)
⇒何かが起きている全ての時間

おお、そもそも品詞が違ってるわけですね。
「動詞」、「名詞」、「形容詞」以外は「めんどくさいからその他」扱いしている私ですが、これはちょっと確認しておいた方がいいかも。

preposition [noun]
a word that is used before a noun, pronoun, or gerund to show place, time, direction etc. In the phrase ‘the trees in the park’, ‘in’ is a preposition
⇒名詞、代名詞、動名詞の前に来る単語で、場所、時間方向などを示す。”the tree in the park”というフレーズ中の”in”(前置詞)

conjunction [noun]
a word such as ‘and’, ‘but’, or ‘because’ which joins parts of a sentence
⇒”and”や”but”, “because” のように分の一部を繋ぐ単語(接続詞)

during の後ろには名詞がこないとおかしい<del>し、while の後は文章(SV)がくるってことだな</del>。
意味的には同じだから文法的なところを意識して使うだけでよさそうだ。

○ during the summer
× while the summer

○ while I was young
× during I was young

ってことで今回はおしまい。

(余談)
英英辞書の定義ってよく考えられているなぁと思う。

while I was young
↓↑
during the time that I was young
↓↑
at some point in the time that I was young

こういうことができるように、

(while) と during the time that を置換しても文法・意味的にOK
(during) と at some point in を置換しても文法・意味的にOK

となるように定義文を作っているってこと。
とても論理的だ。すごい。

Hi, gyutaku san,

Thank you giving me a chance to use my dictionary.

English dictionaries are fun to read.

Longman
New Junoir English Dictionary says as follows:

During:
1. all the time that something is going on.
They swim every day during the holidays.

2. at some time while something else is happening.
He fell asleep during the lesson.

While
all the time that: during the time that

I met him her while I was at school.

While the child played, her mother worked.

Have a nice day.

品詞がコレだからこうなる、といった話は苦手だし覚えきれないので、「~の間」の「~」 に期間(を表す名詞)を 「置きたい」 場合と、「~」 で何かの状態を 「説明したい」 場合で使い分け、とだけ覚えることにしました。
