short や shortage って、お金や食べ物が足りないっていう時に使う事が多いみたいですが、
上のような例文で使っても大丈夫なんでしょうかね。

何の例文かと思ったら…(笑)
間違っているかもですが、気になったことを書いてみます。

lack は他動詞として使うんですね。名詞の lack of ～とごちゃまぜになっていました。
It seems that a few tarantulas have gone away. こんな言い方があるとは知らなかった～
Total count of に冠詞はいらないのかなあ。あと total count of ～よりも total number of ～のほうがよく使われているようでした。

short of animals や shortage of animals でそれなりにヒットするので大丈夫なような…でもl money や time のほうがずっと多くて、やっぱり現代人に足りないのはお金や時間ってことで(笑)
