"All the World's a Stage" by William Shakespeare       (ウィリアム・シェイクスピア 「この世はすべて舞台」)

1600年頃に書かれ上演された、 シェイクスピア(1564-1616) の 恋愛喜劇 の代表作、
As You Like It : お気に召すまま の中で、最もよく知られている詩形式のセリフ。

 (2) And all the men and women merely players:

 (3) They have their exits and their entrances;
    それぞれに退場と登場の場面があり
 (4) And one man in his time plays many parts,
    生涯 多くの役をこなす
 (5) His acts being seven ages. At first the infant,

(13) Jealous in honour, sudden and quick in quarrel,
    名誉に焦がれ、やたら喧嘩っ早い
(14) Seeking the bubble reputation
    空ろな名声のために
(15) Even in the cannon's mouth. And then the justice,
    大砲の口にでも飛び込む。 そして裁判官、
(16) In fair round belly with good capon lined,
    袖の下で膨らませた 大きな丸い腹
(17) With eyes severe and beard of formal cut
    鋭いまなざしに きちんとした髭
(18) Full of wise saws and modern instances;
    もっともらしい箴言 と ありきたりの例で茶を濁し、
(19) And so he plays his part. The sixth age shifts
    その役を演じている。 6番目の役回りは
(20) Into the lean and slipper'd pantaloon,
    スリッパ履きの 痩せた老人
(21) With spectacles on nose and pouch on side;
    鼻眼鏡をかけ 巾着を腰に
(22) His youthful hose, well saved, a world too wide
    若い頃から 大切に取っていた長靴下は太すぎる
(23) For his shrunk shank; and his big manly voice,
    痩やせこけた脛(すね)には。 太かった声は
(24) Turning again toward childish treble, pipes
    再び子供のように甲高く
(25) And whistles in his sound. Last scene of all,
    笛のような音が混じる。 最後の場となるのは
(26) That ends this strange eventful history,
    この奇妙な出来事に満ちた 物語に幕を引く
(27) Is second childishness and mere oblivion;
    第2の幼児期 と まったき忘却
(28) Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything.
    歯もなく、目もなく、味もなく, ・・・・・何もない。
