問題
次の英文を例に則って書き換えなさい。

例
As Singapore is located in the tropical zone, the country is hot and humid throughout the year.
⇒Located in the tropical zone, Singapore is hot and humid throughout the year.

The temple was built in the 8th century, and it is one of the country's oldest buildings.


解答
Built in the 8th century, and the temple is one of the country's oldest buildings.
（その寺は８世紀に建てられ、その国のもっとも古い建物の１つとなっている）

解説
まず、例にあげた英文を解読しましょう。
As Singapore is located in the tropical zone, the country is hot and humid throughout the year.
「シンガポールは熱帯地帯位置しているので、その国は一年を通して暑く湿度が高い。

⇒Located in the tropical zone, Singapore is hot and humid throughout the year.
　↑
　これは分詞構文なのです。「受動態を使った分詞構文」です。

分詞構文の原則は
　接続詞＋S'V'～, SV～.
　→V'ing ～, SV～。
か
　SV～, 接続詞＋S'V'～.
　→SV～, V'ing～.
にする用法です。

例文
　As I saw a policeman. I ran away.（私は警官を見たので、私は逃げた）
　→Seeing a policeman. I ran away.

でも今回は～ing（現在分詞）でななく、過去分詞を使った分詞構文だったのです。
主に受動態で使われます。

　受動態の英文の場合、↓こうなります。

　　接続詞＋S'be 過去分詞'～, SV～.
　　→過去分詞'～, SV～。
　か
　　SV～, 接続詞＋S'be 過去分詞'～.
　　→SV～, 過去分詞'～.

例文
　When she was killed by him, she was 62 years old.（彼女が彼に殺されたとき、彼女は62歳であった）
　→Killed by him, she was 62 years old.

これが踏まえられていたので
As Singapore is located in the tropical zone, the country is hot and humid throughout the year.
は
⇒Located in the tropical zone, Singapore is hot and humid throughout the year.
　↑
　このように「過去分詞」から始まったのでした。


さて！
でも、今回の問題はちょっと困った問題があるのです。

通常は
　接続詞＋S'V'～
　を
　⇒V'ing（現在分詞）～

受動態なら
　接続詞＋S'be 過去分詞'～
　を
　⇒過去分詞'～.

にします。ですが、今回の模範解答はそうなっていません。

●接続詞が付いていないほうを⇒「Built ～」という具合に過去分詞から始まる分詞構文にしてしまっています。

なぜか？

　これは、分詞構文の特別ルールなのです。
・and で繋げられた分詞構文のみ、andが付いていないほうの節を分詞構文にすることができるのです。


The temple was built in the 8th century, and it is one of the country's oldest buildings.
　この文なら、通常だと、and と it を取っ払って、後ろの is を being にでもしたいところです。

しかし！
　and を使った分詞構文なので、特別ルールが適用できます。
　接続詞が付いていないほうの過去分詞を使います。そして主語もちゃんとした位置に置き換えて
⇒Built in the 8th century, and the temple is one of the country's oldest buildings.
という分詞構文にします。


ちゃんと分詞構文を学習すれば出てくる学習事項です。
