⇒彼は最近墓穴を掘りっぱなしだ。

coffin = 棺(ひつぎ)
nail = 釘

final をつけて put a final nail in someone's coffin で止めを刺すという意味になるそうです。
始めは、棺の中のツメがあると何がまずいのだろう、と思ってしまいました(^-^;)
