関係副詞を学ぶシリーズの第３弾でこのシリーズは今回がラストの問題でした。

問題
次のうち通常間違いとされるものを【あるだけ】選びなさい。

１. I remember the place where I met him.
２. I remember the place I met him.

３. I remember the station where I met him.
４．I remember the station I met him.

５. Spring is the time when the garden is most beautiful.
６. Spring is the time the garden is most beautiful.

７．Sunday is the day when I clean my room.
８. Sunday is the day I clean my room.

解答：４（だけ）

問題の意図としては「関係副詞」の省略です。
基本の関係副詞、where when, why, how はけっこう関係副詞そのものが省略されます。
・how はむしろ省略しなければならないくらいです。
　× This is the way how I solve the problem.
　〇 This is the way I solve the problem.（これがその問題を解決した方法だ）
とします
　 もしくは
　〇 This is how I solve the problem.
　　にします。
これは how の先行詞が the way ぐらいしかありえないために起こったのです。

why も先行詞は ほぼほぼ the reason なので、why も実は省略できます。

問題は where と when

実は
　・where は先行詞が the place ならば where を省略できる。
　　でも、それ以外の先行詞は where は省略できない。
　・when はいつでも省略できる。

というルールが存在します。

それに基づいて考えてみましょう。


１. I remember the place where I met him.
２. I remember the place I met him.
（私は私が彼と会った場所を覚えている）
１にあるwhere は関係副詞ですね。この where の先行詞は the place。 the place が先行詞の 関係副詞 where は省略できます。
そうしたものが２です。

３. I remember the station where I met him.
（私は私が彼と会った駅を覚えている）
×４．I remember the station I met him.
３にあるwhere は関係副詞ですね。この where の先行詞は the station。 the place 以外の先行詞の 関係副詞 where は省略できません。
したがって４は不正解です。

５. Spring is the time when the garden is most beautiful.
６. Spring is the time the garden is most beautiful.
（春はその庭が最も美しい時期だ）
５にあるwhen は関係副詞ですね。この when の先行詞は the time. 関係副詞の whenは 先行詞が the time であれ、なんであれ、省略できます。
そうしたものが６です。

７．Sunday is the day when I clean my room.
８. Sunday is the day I clean my room.
（日曜日は私が掃除をする日だ）
７にあるwhen は関係副詞ですね。この when の先行詞は the day. 関係副詞の whenは 先行詞が the day であれ、なんであれ、省略できます。
そうしたものが８です。

関係副詞は省略できる場合、頻繁に表略できます。でも where と when の省略のルールがけっこう学ばれません。以上のルールがありますので、こちらをおさえていただければと思います。いかがだったでしょうか？
