今日は本文ではなく冒頭の二人の会話のディクテーションとそれについての感想を英語で書いてみました。

DAY 7
S : All right, Jenny. Let’s warm up! It’s February, so what do you do to stay warm?
J : I love to drink hot tea.
S : Ah, hot tea.
J : How about you, Steve?
S : I love to be inside of Japanese コタツ. It’s my favorite a piece of furniture.
J : Oh, I love those too. I always fall asleep.
S : Oh, you have a コタツ too.
J : I do. It’s really nice during the winter time.

Wow! They both have コタツs. I don’t think there are many Japanese people who have got a コタツ in Tokyo these days. I don’t have a コタツ either. But I love it too.

DAY 8
whatの使い方苦手だなと思いました。

ここでの飲酒年齢は何歳ですか？　What's the drinking age here?

「何歳ですか」の日本語に引っ張られて悩んでしまったけど
ここでの飲酒年齢はどれくらいですか？と考えればwhat is ~?ですよね。

日本の首都はどこですか？　What's the capital of Japan?も「どこ」という日本語に引っ張られてwhereを使いたくなります。

今日の冒頭の会話は
S : Have you ever been to New Orleans? How about you, Jenny?
J : Yes, I have been. It’s a wonderful city. I loved the live music there. How about you, Steve? Have you ever been to New Orleans?
S : Yes, I have. I loved that city. I studied French in college. And so many things were written and even spoken in French. For me that was the most interesting thing.
Have you ever been to New Orleans?
これに対する私の答えは超簡単、行ったことないからｗ
I've never been to New Orleans.　But i'd like to go there.

と複数形で返事してるのですが、これはこたつが複数形なのか、熱いお茶とこたつで複数形なのか、どっちなのでしょうね？

Steveさんの答えがなんだかよくわからなかったので、ググってみたら、ニューオリンズはもともとフランスの植民地だったせいで、今でもフランス語が根付いているとのこと。
それを知らなかったので、フランス語がどうの、というのを理解できませんでした。

こないだから、なんか思い込みが激しいというか、基礎知識がないせいで、ヒアリングが追いつきません。

コタツを家具として表現しているのでfurnitureは形は単数形でも複数形扱いとなるのでそれに対する答えなので複数形だと思いました。

はい、行ったことありますよ。大好きな都市でしたよ。僕は大学で英語の勉強をしたんだ。多くのものがフランス語でか書かれていたりフランス語さえ話されていたんだ。僕にとってはそれが一番おもしろいことだったよ。

みたいな感じで言っていると思ったので逆にニューオリンズはかつてはフランス領だったのかなと思いました。
そしてスティーブさんはフランス語も話せるんだとすごいなと、、、。

DAY 6
予約したいのですが。
I would like to make a reservation.
何名様ですか？
How many people in your party?
３人です。
We are a party of three. / Three of us. / Three (people).
５人で予約したいのですが。
I would like to make a reservation for a party of five.
こちらではなくあちらにしてもいいですか？
Instead of this one, can we have that table?
うちの子供達は少しうるさいかもしれませんが。
Our kids might be a little loud.
他の人たちに迷惑をかけたくありません。
We don’t want to bother other people.
ハッピアワーはありますか？
Do you have a happy hour?
どのメニューがハッピアワーのメニューですか？
Which menu is the happy hour menu?
半額 half price
これらの料理は半額です。
These dishes are half price.

furnitureって、単数でも複数形なんですか！
それははじめて知りました。
scissorsみたいに、1個でも複数形なのは、パーツとして2個あるから、というのは知ってましたけど。
