My! I just logged in and realized there'd been a little tempest in a teapot ....coffee cup, so I wanted to comment, but then I was confronted with this message:「この質問に対する回答は締め切られました」so I am starting my own new thread (excuse me for taking this liberty).

First, tattsun999さん、thank you for so gallantly springing to my defense! But I have to say, I was not at all offended by welciayorkmartさん's comment. He is always a very good friend to me and I know not to take offense, even if he may seem "rough around the edges" at times. Actually, I got a good laugh from 「高飛車な言い方をお詫びします」.

Rikaichan (my web browser-based 和英辞典) informed me thusly:

高飛車たかびしゃ (adj-na,n) high-handed; domineering; on one's high horse

which reminded me of how when I was growing up my elders would sometimes scold me, saying "Get off your high horse!". That's an expression we don't hear anymore. I miss many of the things the previous generation used to say (they're all gone now, in my family).

At the risk of being off-topic, again, I will just say that if I hear (or read) "I drink coffee" it makes me think "I drink coffee, but not tea." It's the kind of thing one might say to a waitress when she's taking orders for drinks at a table.

喫茶店で、ウェートレスに注も注文するときには、"I drink coffee, but not tea." と言うことはある。というんですね。
ありがとうございました。

ちなみに、「高飛車」は西洋の「チェス」に似た競技（競技というのかどうかは分かりません）「将棋」から出た言葉のようです。
日本語の辞書から

たかびしゃ【高飛車】
（１）将棋で，飛車を定位置から 2 間または 3 間前に進めて攻勢をとる形。
（２）頭ごなしに相手をおさえつけること。高圧的。「高飛車に出る」

将棋をやる人は、（１）を、普通の人は（2）の意味に使うことの多い言葉です。
アンヤさんは、大人になって、「高飛車に言うな」と怒られたことを思い出す　ということだそうですが、high-handed　を使った例文を載せておきます。なお、例文中の「強引な」は、今回のケースではあまり適切ではないようです。

この英語は「傲慢で独断的な態度の」という意味だから「高圧的」の訳としても使えよう。

The maid treated her employer's guests in a high-handed way.（メイドは主人の客に対して高圧的な態度で接した）。

overbearingとしても同じ。ほかにhigh-pressureも近い。「高圧的な」「押しの強い」といった感じである。

I didn't really want to buy this encyclopedia but the high-pressure salesman bamboozled me into it.（この百科辞典、本当はほしくなかったんだけど、強引なセールスマンにまんまと買わされてしまった）。

文脈によってはsnobbish（俗物の、上にへつらい下に威張る）があたる場合もあろう。

She treats servants snobbishly.（彼女は召使いに高飛車な態度で接する）。

逆に、「控えめな」「低姿勢の」といった場合はlow-key(ed)という語があたる。

That lawyer's low-key(ed) manner was very effective.（あの弁護士の控えめな態度がかえって効を奏した）。

記者はその作家の高飛車な話しぶりに腹を立てた。The reporter got angry at the high-handed way the author spoke.

Thank you welciayorkmartさん。 You're presented so much vocabulary (as you always do)! It makes me feel there's still so, so much to learn.

I don't mean that we say "I drink coffee, but not tea" to the waitress. I was saying we might say simply "I drink coffee" when ordering. Maybe it's something like 私はコーヒーにします. (Does anyone in Japan ever actually write 珈琲 for コーヒー? I just noticed that 当て字.)

You mentioned 高圧的 for high-handed, and indeed that is how Rikaichan
translates it:

高圧的こうあつてき (adj-na) high-handed; oppressive

Thank you again. I think the examples you give are very helpful in giving a sense of usage of different words.

この言葉、日本人だったら、「コーヒーを頂きます。紅茶ではありませんよ」と訳すと思います。あるいはコーヒー店　（珈琲店）（最近はコーヒー店も出現していますが、日本では普通は喫茶店（きっさてん）でしょうね。）　で、「コーヒーください」「コーヒー一つね（男性が言う）」「コーヒー（ぶっきらぼうな男性）」と言うようです。

珈琲は一つ一つの漢字が、「こ」「ひ」とは読まないので、当て字（phonetic equivalent）だろうと思われます。店の名前としてはこの漢字を使う方が多いかもしれません。

日本語の当て字の例　
煙草（たばこ　タバコ）、煙管（きせる　キセル）、　歌留多・加留多（かるた　カルタ）、　倶楽部・俱楽部（クラブ）など。　日本文学をお読みになるときには参考にしてください。クラブという漢字、違いが分かりますか。よく似ているでしょう？
