Pass
The boat is passing under the bridge.
pass は「何かを通過して先に進む」ということで、The boat is passing under the bridge. は「ボートが橋の下を通過している」ということ。「テストに合格する」もpass a testと表現しますが、まさに「テストという関門を通過して先に進む」といった感じですね。但し、Pass the sugar, please. （砂糖を取ってください）では、砂糖は通過する対象ではなく、砂糖を取って私のところまで通過させてほしいということです。同じ「通過させる」でも文脈によっては、I’ll pass this natto. だと「この納豆はパスしたい（納豆を自分の前を通過させる）」といった意味になります。
The woman is passing some files to the man.
passのコアは「何かを通過する（させる）」というものです。pass の名詞形には「通行許可証」といった意味がありますが、「通過するための手段」ですね。passport「パスポート」も同じです。自動詞の pass は「どこかを通過する」という意味であり、他動詞的に使用すれば「誰か（何か）を通過させる」という意味になります。The woman is passing some files to the man. では、女性が自分が持っているファイルを男性のところまで通過させている状況です。「手渡す」であれば hand over ですが、passの場合、「通過（移動）」の意味合いがあります。
