There was once an old castle.

その昔、古いお城がありました。

The castle stood in the middle of a deep gloomy forest.

そのお城は　深く暗い森の真ん中に　立っていました。

And an old fairy lived in the castle

そのお城にはある年老いた妖精が住んでおりました。

This fairy could change into any shape she likes.

この妖精は　好きな形に変身することができました。

She could flow around some places as a bird, or move around the other places as a cat.

その妖精は鳥になって向こうに飛んでいったかと思いきや、またその向こうでは猫になってうろつきまわっていました。

Then, at night she always became a woman.

夜になると　いつも　妖精は　女の人になりました。

Any young man came to her castle many times.

若い男性の誰も彼もが何度もお城を訪れました。

【8】
Then, she made them fixed, and could not move until she came and set them free.

そんな時　妖精は　男性を動けなくしました。　
男性は　妖精が来て、彼らを自由にするまで動くことができませんでした。

But it is not until they tell her never to come again that she would do.

ただ、男性がもうここには来ないとわない限り自由にさせていました。

When any pretty maiden came in the castle she was changed into a bird.

きれいな乙女が　城に来た時　彼女は　鳥に変化した。

Then, the fairy put the bird into a cage, and locked it up in a chamber in the castle.

そして、妖精はカゴのなかへ鳥を閉じ込め、カゴを城の中の部屋にしまい込んでいました。
