★「近くに」を現すniar と「接触」を表すon
The golf ball stopped near the hole on the green.
near は「近くに」ということです。この写真(*)のように「ゴルフボールがホールの近くで止まった」といった状況でも使いますが、I live near the sea. といえば、たとえ海まで車で20分ぐらいかかってもnear the sea といえ、実際の距離は相対的です。I live by the sea. になると「海のすぐそばに住んでいる」と言うことで、物理的な近接を表します。しかし、near にはnear miss （異常接近、今一歩）という言い方があるように、「もう少しだった」という気持ちを伴う場合は near がピッタリです。ゴルフのグリーンは on the greenあるいは on the putting green と言います。the green やthe farm のようにある用途のために作った区域はon を使う傾向があるようです。(*写真が見たい方はmikapyonまでメッセージください）
