ちょっと銭湯に行くくらいの時間で、お腹は空いていないという外国人を連れて行く、すんごくジャパニーズなところって他にどこかなー？と考えていました。

ただ、短期出張（顔見せ）って感じだと、希望すれば観光もさせるので、私はアリだと思います♪
そもそも、仕事らしい仕事が無いしw
夫のところの海外視察の方は、定時の間はいなくちゃいけないけど、これといってしてもらうこともなくなったら、お菓子買ってきてひとりティータイムだったそうですw

湯船で４時１０分じゃ、４時からの会議にどんだけ遅刻したのやら・・・。
しかも、ホカホカ状態で。

今日のテーマは相撲でしたね！
（ちなみにニュースで英会話も今日は相撲の話だったよ）

外国人の友達にいろいろ教えてあげてましたね～。
私もそのくらいペラペラスラスラ～っと、日本文化について語れたらいいけど＾＾；

歴史が長いから、伝統は変えられない、みたいなことを最後のほうで言ってたけど、

特に相手が欧米の人のときは、いろいろつっこまれそう。

M:　Look at those big men, Taro. They’re giant.
T: Oh, they’re rikishi, Japanese sumo wrestlers. We’re in Ryogoku, the sumo city of Tokyo. Do you want to see a match today?
M: That sounds exciting. Please take me there, Taro.
T: All right. Follow me.

M: I don’t know anything about sumo. What do they do?
T: It’s a simple form of wrestling. There’re two ways to win. First, you can push the other person out of the circle.
M: Or?
T: Or you can throw him down. If his hand touches, he loses.
M: How about his knee?
T: His knees, too. Only his feet can touch the dohyo.
M: Sorry, what is the dohyo?
T: The dohyo is the ring. They wrestle on the dohyo.
M: Oh, okay.

T: Here they come.
M: What are they wearing?
T: That’s called a mawashi. A fighter throws down the other rikishi by pulling the mawashi.
M: So sumo is easy. You push or you pull.
T: It’s not so simple. There’re 82 techniques to win.
M: 82?! That’s a lot.
T: It is a traditional sport. Fighters in the past tried many ideas.
M: Hey, who is the man in the hat?
T: What did you say?
M: Who is the man in the kimono?
T: He’s a sumo referee. He’s called a gyoji. There’re also five judges besides the dohyo.
M: Why do they have so many judges?
T: Sumo is very, very fast. Sometimes it is difficult for the gyoji on the dohyo to see everything.

M: By the way, why do the fighters wear their hair like that?
T: It’s called chonmage. It was a hairstyle in the edo period. Sumo became popular during that time, and so rikishi have chonmage today, too.
M: So it’s a tradition?
T: That’s right. And it is like a helmet when someone throws you down.
M: I get it. But why don’t they wear helmets?
T: Sumo has a history. It started more than 1,000 years ago. We can’t change it now.
M: 1,000 years? How did it start?
T: It is said that sumo started as a ceremony. Every year, two rikishi fought in front of the Emperor. If it was a good match, it would be a good year.
M: Who decided if it was a good match?
T: The Shinto leaders.

M: Look. The wresters are here. It’s going to start soon. Wait a minute. What did they just throw?
T: Oh, that? That was salt. It cleans the dohyo.
M: Oh, I see.
T: One of the highlights of the sumo is the tachiai, the beginning of a match. They run at each other. You use your arms and head to make the other fighter lose balance. If you do so, then that’s a good tachiai. Watch this!
M: I will.
T: If you don’t win in the tachiai, it’s been important to hold his mawashi. Are you listening?
M: Yeah. What? Taro! You talked too much. And now the match is already over.

Hi, everybody.　This is James Tracks in Japan. I’m here at Tokyo station to see the fastest train in the world, the shinkansen. It’s the super cool train known as the bullet train in English. I have invited train journalist Jiro Suzuki to tell us more.

“Thanks for joining us today, Jiro.”
“I’m happy to be here, James.”
“So tell us what is so great about the shinkansen.”
“Well, first of all, it is very fast. Some shinkansen goes 300 kilometers per hour. Only a few new trains in the world can go faster than the shinkansen.”
“So it isn’t the fastest?”
“No, but I believe it is the best train in the world.”
“Why?”
“There’re three main reasons the shinkansen is so good. First is the speed. It began running in 1964. The top speed was 210 kilometers per hour, and that was the fastest in the world at that time.”
“That is amazing! Your shinkansen was faster 50 years ago than the trains in the United States now!”
“Thank you. The second reason is the shinkansen always runs on time.”
“Always?”
“We have control centers watching all trains very closely. They make small changes before small problems can become big problems. So the shinkansen is never more than 30 seconds late. No other trains anywhere in the world can do that.”
“In my city, trains are often one hour late. The shinkansen is amazing!”
“There’s one more reason the shinkansen is special. It is safe. There’s a special yellow shinkansen. It is called ‘Doctor Yellow.’ It usually runs at night. It checks the tracks and wires and looks for problems.”
“So the shinkansen is safe because ‘Doctor Yellow’ checks everything. “
“That’s right, but people check everything, too. Every night 3,000 workers check the tracks and wires and change all parts.”
“So the technology and hard work make the shinkansen safe.”
“That’s right. I believe it’s the safest train in the world.”
“I can’t wait to get on the shinkansen. Let’s go!”

“Amazing. It’s not just fast but it’s quiet. Oh, somebody is selling something. ”
“You can buy bento boxes in the shinkansen. ”
“I’m sorry. I don’t understand. What is a bento box?”
“It is a lunch box. You can buy drinks, snacks, and other local food, too. The shinkansen used to have a dining car. It does not offer that service anymore because the time you spend on the train is shorter now.”
“Look! The woman with the bento boxes bowed before going to the next car. That is very Japanese.”
“That is the Japanese spirit of Omotenashi. “
“Amazing!”

かんたーんと思って聞き始めたけど、何か作業しながらだと、新幹線は時間かっきりとか黄色い新幹線がどうこうとか、弁当売ってるよとか、そんなのしか残らなかったです。

今回のテーマは「落語」でしたね。

途中、beardが beer に聞こえて「え？落語家ってビール飲まないの！？」なんて一瞬思いましたが、その後の流れから間違いに気づきましたｗ

落語ってちゃんと聞きに行ったことないですねぇ。寄席っていうんですっけ？
笑点ならテレビで何度も見てるんですけどｗｗ
ドラマのタイガー＆ドラゴンで、落語が若者にもけっこう身近になった気がします。

ちなみに、ほとんど男性、という話がありましたが、女性もいますよね。
この方は女性で、しかも English Rakugo です！


この方のことは知らなかったんですけど、発音とかも丁寧にされてて、ふだんから海外へむけて落語を発信している人なんだろうなーって思いました。
で、経歴調べるとなんだかすごかったｗ　外国語学部の准教授なさってました。

　私もbeardをbeerと途中まで聞き違えてて、「落語家さんはビールを飲まないのか。あー、伝統芸能だから和風を大切にしてるってことかな」と勝手に解釈してしまいました。
