People are living longer and longer these days, so nursing care is becoming more and more important.
Years ago, people didn't know nursing work was so important.
Then one person changed that.
She thought nurses could make a big difference.
Her name was Florence Nightingale.
Today, we will introduce her story.
Florence Nightingale was English but was born in the city of Florence, Italy in 1820.
Florence was a beautiful city.
Her parents wanted their daughter to be beautiful, so they gave her the name Florence.
When she grew older, she decided that she wanted to become a nurse and help other people.
However, in those days, rich girls never became nurses.
They usually married rich men and became mothers.
Nightingale came from a rich family and her parents did not want her to become a nurse.
"You want to become a nurse? I don't want to hear such a thing," said her father.
"Please, Father. Please say I can start it tostudy to become a nurse!”
“Do you know what kind of a job it is? “ her mother asked.
“The hospitals are not clean. You might become sick. There must be another job you want to do, Florence.”
“But Mother, this is what I want to do!”
Back then being a nurse was not a good job.
It was dirty and dangerous.
Nightingale’s parents were against her.
But her decision was made.
She studied to become a nurse.
It was a very difficult time for her because her parents were angry.
After a few years, the Crimean War began.
England and France were fighting Russia.
Nightingale and 38 other nurses decided to go and help.
There they found a lot of sick men but not many doctors.
Many sick men did not have beds and they were sleeping on dirty floors.
Nightingale said to the other nurses,
“Ladies, let us try to help all these men who fight for our country. Then the world will see nurses are important.”
Nightingale and the other nurses worked long days taking care of the men.
Sometimes they worked at night, too.
She walked around with a lamp in her hand helping the sick men.
She was called “The Lady with a Lamp.”
A newspaper in England wrote a story about her.
Nightingale became famous for her work in the Crimean War.
Nightingale’s mother sent her a letter saying she was sorry.
“We are very proud of you, daughter. “
After the war, she returned to England and started a school for nurses in London.
She wrote a book about nursing and people all around the world copied her ideas.
Many of these ideas are still being used today.
Nightingale said that the first step for nursing was keeping hospitals clean.
Thanks to her, hospitals today are very clean.
As a nurse, Florence Nightingale saved many people.
She died more than 100 years ago but her ideas are saving people today.
She made the world understand the importance of nursing.
If you go shopping today, there’re many kinds of new computers, tablet computers, and smart phones everywhere. It is difficult to imagine our lives without computers.
But not so long ago, computers were very big, and only a few people used them. Today’s story is about Steve Jobs.
He changed the world by making computers everyone could use. Steve Jobs was born in 1955 in San Francisco. San Francisco is very close to Silicon Valley that is the world’s famous high-tech business area in the United States.
When he was a child, Steve wanted to understand everything. So one day, his father showed him how to take apart radios. Putting radios together again was more difficult. Steve was very interested. He works for hours and hours on radios and other electronics such as TVs.
Even as a high school student, he liked playing with electronics. In 1971, he met a new friend. Later, they changed the world together.
“I’m Steve.”
“I’m Steve, too, Steve Wozniak. Call me Woz.”
The two Steves became good friends because they both loved to make things.
In the 1970’s, computers were very expensive so Woz made a computer by himself. Jobs saw it and had a great idea.
“Hey, Woz, let’s make our own company. Lots of people want computers.”
“That’s a great idea. We need to think of a name for our company.”
“How about … Apple Computers?”
“Apple? Why?”
“I love apples and it starts with the first letter of the alphabet. It’ll be the first in a phone book.”
“I get it. Great idea!”
That small company became bigger and bigger. The first big idea Apple Computers had was making computers for everyone. The next idea was a mouse. It is very popular now, but in 1984, people only use the keyboard for everything. By using a mouse, computers were suddenly easy to use. Then more and more people bought computers. Apple became famous because they had smart new ideas.
Steve Jobs liked to say, “Think different.” His different ideas changed so many things. For example, the ipod changed music. Before the ipod, music players were not so small and had many buttons. Also, if people wanted to listen to music outside, they carried around many CDs. The ipod made everything simple. It changed the way people listened to music.
Jobs and Apple did the same thing for the telephone. By touching the screen with your fingers, you can use it as a phone, a camera, and a music player. Also you can look at the internet with it. Because of him, people think differently about phones now.
When Steve Jobs died in 2012, U.S. president Obama talked about him. He said Steve Jobs created a new world. Many people found out Steve Jobs died by reading it on their iphone or ipad. That is a perfect example of the changes Steve Jobs made.
Although Steve Jobs is no longer here, the changes he made will help us for many many years.

今週の偉人伝はナイチンゲール。
子ども用の伝記を昔読んだことがあるので、だいたいその内容を思い出しながら聞きました。
そうそう、当時は看護婦さんって身分の低い女性の仕事だったんですよね。
良家の女性は良い家に嫁いで良妻賢母たれ～～ってね。
今じゃ共働きしなくてはやっていけない家庭も多いので、どの年齢からでもどの地域でも需要のある看護師の資格があるのは強いけどね！
the Lady with the(a?) Lamp って言ってたよね。「ランプの貴婦人」ってやつだよね。
あとはクリミアでの活躍の話もしてたけど、「クリミアの天使」にあたる言葉って言ってました？

は、直訳するとすごくおかしいよね。英語的な表現なのかな。
全体的に文語調であるせいか、did not とか Let us とか、短縮形を使わずに書かれているのに気づきました。
あと、たった５分でまとめているので、突っ込みどころは満載ですね。
なぜお金持ちのお嬢様がいきなりnurse になろうと思ったのか、知りたかったな。
それと、クリミア戦争で看護をしたのはナイチンゲールだけじゃなかったのに、なぜ彼女が新聞にまで取り上げられたのか。何か特別画期的なことをしたのかな？ 夜の見回り程度じゃないよね？
彼女の両親も、現金なもんだね。大反対していたくせに、有名人になった途端、豹変。

私が子供のころに読んだ伝記だと、
傷ついた兵士たちの臭いとか血とかも嫌がらず、他の看護師たちが腰が引けちゃうような場面でも積極的に看護につとめたとか。それで傷ついた兵士たちからもかなり慕われたし、看護師さんの中でもリーダー的な存在になっていったみたい。
それに、やっぱり良家の御嬢さんがそういう仕事をするということは、お嫁の貰い手がなくなるかもしれないし（フローレンスは望んでなかったとは思うけど）、かなりリスキーなことではあったはずだから、自分の恵まれた境遇を捨ててまで看護師になったのは、かなりセンセーショナルなことだったんじゃないかな。
まぁ今も昔も、良くも悪くも美談は話題になるよね。

学生のころ ナイチンゲール誓詞というのを何回も読まされまして・・・・・（ナイチンゲールが作ったわけではないのに） もう忘れちゃったけど、入学式も、卒業式も、何か行事のあるたびに声をそろえて暗唱するんです。
今みたいにいい薬や道具がない時にナイチンゲールのやったことの一つと言われていることでとても印象に残っているのは
感染症の人がいるときは窓を開けるのです
締め切りは感染を助長するそうです。（窓を開けることで新たな問題が起こることもあるかもしれませんが・・・） 我が家の子供がインフルエンザのときは時々全部の窓を開けて換気をしました（寒くなるけどww) ナイチンゲールの教えだーって言ってた気がする

今日はスティーブ・ジョブズ、割と最近の人物についてでしたね～。
短いながらも、コンピューターの歴史も含めて上手にまとまってるな～と思いました。
会社を興してからのゴタゴタや、後世のことはあまり触れられてなかったけどね。
ちなみに最初のほうで marginal lives って聞こえたところがあったんだけど
あんまり自信がない。なんて言ってたのかなぁ・・・
