1. Once in a blue moon

Mặt Trăng xanh (blue moon) hoàn toàn có thật trong đời sống. Đây là hiện tượng xảy ra khi trăng tròn vào thời điểm khác thường của tháng và rất hiếm. Chính vì vậy, tiếng Anh sử dụng thành ngữ once in a blue moon để chỉ những việc hiếm khi xảy ra.

Ví dụ:

Nessie appears once in blue moon in the Loch Ness.

(Quái vật Nessie hiếm khi xuất hiện trên hồ Loch Ness.)

2. Spill the beans

Thành ngữ cổ này xuất phát từ một truyền thống có từ thời Hy Lạp cổ đại. Khi ấy, các thành viên hội đồng sẽ tiến hành bầu chọn bằng cách bỏ hạt đậu vào mũ của ứng viên họ thích. Ứng viên sẽ đổ đậu ra khỏi mũ để thể hiện là họ được chọn. Spill the beans ý chỉ việc công bố kết quả, bí mật cho người khác biết.

Ví dụ:

So who spilled the beans about her affair with David?

(Rốt cuộc thì ai đã làm lộ chuyện cô ta ngoại tình với David vậy?)

3. Got ants in pants

Cảm giác có…kiến bò trong quần chắc chắn không hề dễ chịu gì! Chính vì vậy, thành ngữ got ants in pants thường được dùng để diễn tả cảm giác bồn chồn, nhột nhạt, đứng ngồi không yên của người nói.

Ví dụ:

I got ants in my pants when she called my name.

(Tớ thấy bồn chồn và lo lắng khi cô ấy gọi tên mình.)


4. Jump on the bandwagon

Từ bandwagon xuất hiện từ thế kỷ 19. Đây là những chiếc xe ngựa có ban nhạc mà các chính trị gia dùng để quảng bá hình ảnh cho mình vào thời đó. Jump on the bandwagon là thành ngữ dùng để nói về hành động chạy theo một trào lưu đang được ưa chuộng hoặc thịnh hành.

Ví dụ:

After some politicians promised to cut taxes, others jumped on the bandwagon.

(Sau khi một số chính trị gia hứa cắt giảm thuế, những ứng viên còn lại cũng làm tương tự.)

5. On cloud nine

Theo truyền thuyết, tầng mây thứ 9 là nơi cao nhất và hạnh phúc nhất trên Thiên đường. Chính vì vậy, on cloud nine nghĩa là hạnh phúc ngập tràn, cảm giác thỏa mãn, vui vẻ khiến người nói như đang bay trên chín tầng mây!

Ví dụ:

Ever since Mary got her promotion at work, she's been on cloud nine.

(Từ khi Mary được thăng chức, cô ấy hạnh phúc như đang trên chín tầng mây vậy!)


6. Come rain or shine

Thành ngữ này thường dùng khi bạn cam kết sẽ thực hiện một điều gì đó, bất kể tình huống có ra sao. Dù mưa giông hay trời quang mây tạnh, bạn vẫn sẽ giữ đúng lời hứa của mình.

Ví dụ:

I’ll be at your football game, come rain or shine.

(Mình sẽ đến xem trận bóng của bồ, dù có ra sao đi nữa!)

7. Go the extra mile

Xuất phát từ lời răn dạy của Chúa, go the extra mile thường dùng để nhấn mạnh việc bạn sẵn sàng cố gắng hết sức, hoàn thành công việc vượt trên cả mong đợi.

Ví dụ:

Suzy always goes the extra mile to make my birthday special.

(Suzy luôn khiến sinh nhật của tôi trở nên đặc biệt hơn cả mong đợi.)

8. The ball is in your court

Thành ngữ đậm tinh thần thể thao này lấy hình ảnh sân bóng làm biểu tượng. Quả bóng đang trong sân của bạn nghĩa là những cơ hội đã đến, chỉ tùy vào bạn có biết nắm lấy chúng hay không.

Ví dụ:

Well, they invited you, so the ball is in your court now. Do you want to go out with them or not?

(Giờ thì bọn họ đã mời bạn rồi, chỉ tùy vào bạn thôi. Bạn có muốn đi chơi cùng mấy người đó hay không?)

9. Have a whale of a time

Cá voi là loài động vật lớn nhất thế giới hiện nay. Có lẽ chính vì vậy mà tiếng Anh chọn thành ngữ have a whale of a time để thể hiện rằng ai đó đang có nhiều thời gian tuyệt vời, vui vẻ trong đời.

Ví dụ:

I spent my summer holiday in Japan and had a whale of a time.

(Mình đã dành hết mùa hè ở Nhật và có khoảng thời gian vô cùng vui vẻ tại đó.)

10. Take it with a pinch of salt

Khoảng đầu Công Nguyên, một ít muối được xem là nguyên liệu cần thiết, giúp thuốc dễ uống hơn và thức ăn dễ ăn hơn. Từ đó, thành ngữ take it with a pinch of salt ra đời nhằm cảnh báo chúng ta phải thận trọng, đừng tin mọi thông tin người khác nói với mình vì có thể nó đã được “chế biến”.


Ví dụ:

If I were you, I would take his advice with a pinch of salt.

(Nếu tôi là bạn, tôi sẽ thận trọng hơn trước lời khuyên của ông ấy.)

1. Read everything you can get your hands on

Well, this content will be full of juicy new vocabulary, as well as a fair amount you already know. This helps you improve quickly, as re-exposure to learned vocabulary gives you new examples in context, therefore reinforcing those words in your mind. 2. Actively take note of new vocabulary

This tip is a classic one for good reason: it works! When learning, we often enjoy a new word of phrase so much that forgetting it seems impossible. But trust us, not everything sticks the first time. To fight this, get into the habit of carrying around a funky notebook or using a tool like Evernote. Whenever you hear or read a new word or expression, write it down in context: that is, in a sentence and with its meaning noted. This saves you time as you won’t return to that word and ask yourself: “What did that word/expression mean again?”

3. Talk with real live humans

What is a language for if not to communicate? 4. Subscribe to podcasts or Youtube channels (in English)

Like humor? Politics? Blogging? Cooking? With topics covering every interest imaginable, there’s an English-speaking podcast or Youtube channel out there for you. Subscribe to a few and listen while driving or watch during the commute to school or work. At first, you might find the native accents difficult, but stick with it and you’ll soon start to understand what you hear (as well as learning lots of new vocab from a native speaker!)

5. Go abroad

If there’s a better way to learn English than being immersed in it while living and studying in an English-speaking country, we’d love to know! It’s no secret that English is the most widely-spoken language in the world, and with a long list of countries to choose between, you can select your ideal learning environment based on hemisphere, weather, or favorite city. Think Australia, New Zealand, the UK, the US, Canada, and South Africa to name a few!

6. Use your friends

Have friends who post online in English? Don’t gloss over them in your newsfeed: scan the items they share and commit to exploring one or two each day. They might be news or magazine articles, videos, talks, blog posts, songs, or anything else: if it’s in English and the topic interests you, it’s going to be helpful!

7. Ask a lot of questions

Curiosity may have killed the cat, but it also propelled the language learner to fluency! As you learn English, you’ll soon collect a mountain of questions. Don’t sit on your doubts – be curious and resolve them! If you’re enrolled in a course, ask your teacher (it’s what they’re there for, after all). But if you’re learning alone, don’t worry: find answers in blogs or language websites, ask other learners, or read through forums. You’ll be happy you did!

8. Take a lead from the stars

Mix up your learning by picking a native English-speaking actor or singer you like. Now, head online, find a bunch of interviews they’ve given – and watch them! Watch once for gist, then again, taking time to note down interesting expressions and words you hear. The slang, stories, humor, and anecdotes that come out of these interview are sure to give you plenty to work with!

9. Start with what you really need

Your English studies are likely to go far more quickly if you constantly remind yourself of your motives for learning. Are you going on a study exchange? Then, focus on vocabulary related to your studies. Have an overseas conference? Brush up on conversation starters to use with the other participants. Going on a gap year? Looks like travel and tourism vocabulary will be your guide. If you simply launch into learning English hoping to magically learn anything and everything at once, you’re likely to end up confused and burned out. Which brings us to…

10. Don’t kick yourself while you’re down

When you start to feel like you’re not making ground – which happens to all learners at some point – don’t say, “I don’t speak English,” or “I’ll never get this.” In fact, ban those phrases from your vocabulary! They only blur your understanding of the progress you’re making and convince you that your dreams of speaking English well are impossible.
